Life In The Time of Corona aka CoVid19: Day 9

My phone alarm didn’t go off this morning! I thought I set it up last night but apparently didn’t or it went off and I pressed the stop button instead of snooze.

I must be physically tired. I forgot to mention that while working from home, I also try to do some house work aside from cooking – making sure the house is clean every day, feed the cats, organize our meals, etc. My other non-negotiable ritual before going to bed since CoVid19 started is to sanitize the frequently touched surfaces and objects (cellphones, door and cabinet handles, chair backs, faucets, sinks, toilet bowls, remotes, etc.) around the house with a damp clean absorbent cloth soaked in soap and warm water. Best, safest and environmentally-friendly way to kill any virus at home. There may be just the two of us but we pick up the mail, Amazon boxes for items we started ordering online, or drive for errands. We let the cats go out for a few minutes of fresh air, too and they come back from their outdoor adventure and step on surfaces and may bring who knows what dirt or bacteria from outside.

At first I was using disinfecting wipes but I realized I wasn’t really helping with the environment by using those disposable non-flushable wipes. I read that some people were accidentally or maybe, mindlessly, flushing them in the toilet and ended clogging not only their toilet bowls but also their neighborhood’s sewers. Can’t be responsible for that!

I use and love these set of kitchen cloth from Trader Joe’s! They’re the best!

Since I got up late, I only had the time to meditate and stretch. I had all the intention to do my HIIT session but I was ‘late’ for work! Yes, I’m holding myself accountable.

Tip for those of you who are new to working remotely or finding it hard to motivate yourselves to move while in shelter – act and think like you’re physically going to your office, your shop, your club/gym or your golf game as you would have during normal times. Have a schedule and stick to it. Same goes for those of you who are homeschooling your kids. Get them on a schedule and stick to it.

Our mind is amazing at what it can do to to help with our productivity, well-being and outlook no matter where we are. The brain is a powerful tool. Believe me. Or if not, read Nelson Mandela’s biography, Long Walk to Freedom, and learn how he survived solitary confinement for many years and you’ll get what I mean.

We have to have perspective. The right one. If you’re reading this and you’re feeling isolated and depressed or bored, consider yourself lucky. Today I woke up with some messages from friends and what saddened me the most is the photo message shared by a friend from the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte admitting to his countrymen that they have lost control against CoVid19. As of today, Wednesday, March 24 – 69,176 of its population has the virus and 6,820 deaths. 600+ of their own population dying on a daily basis. (Source: Worldometers.info)

Consider yourself lucky that you are alive, well and still living comfortably despite the circumstances we are all in. Consider yourself lucky that despite losing your job you can still claim unemployment if you live in the US. Consider yourself lucky that you have food on the table or that someone is helping you with whatever your needs are.

People in other parts of the world – in Third World countries especially – where poverty is rampant even before CoVid19 – are now 1000x worst off than you.

Imagine a street vendor in New Delhi who earns a measly $2/day. The only income earner in a family of 5 now without any means of earning that precious dollar because the streets are empty? Put yourself in the shoe of a well-educated person in Indonesia whose only means of income is to be a tourist guide. Already underemployed to begin with, now all of a sudden finds him/herself without any means to earn a livelihood and no safety net even from the government. Or a cab driver in Buenos Aires with no passenger in site and a family waiting to be fed.

Consider yourself lucky.

On second thought, maybe not if you’re like me living in America with someone like below. 🙄 Touche!

Tomorrow is yet another day. Sleep tight and sweet dreams.
