Life In The Time of Corona aka CoVid19: Day 18

Somehow time is flying despite going nowhere these days. Work continues to take majority of my regular days. I had a false impression when the shelter-in-place order was announced that at least I would be able to do more personal things but alas, I have not really made much progress in this direction.

No complaints here, don’t get me wrong. I’m just stating a reality. Today, unemployment in the US hit 10 million. 10 million! It’s only been the 3rd week since people were asked to stay home and 10 million of the working population no longer have jobs. The impact of this CoVid19 virus is swift and shocking. So I’m very thankful for what I have. I’m still blessed despite the odds.

I volunteered to help one of the food banks in my county but I just got an email that I’m not needed anymore. Apparently, the US National Guard is stepping in and also they don’t want people unintentionally getting exposed to the virus. I was referred to some smaller non-profits needing help but they needed personnel during the weekday. I’m still working full time so I just decided to donate additional cash. Again, let’s do whatever we can if we’re able to help.

Finally, too, the moneyed people and the big corporations are finally stepping up to help stem the pandemic – either via donations in kind and in cash for the healthcare industry or in kind for the food banks to help the millions who just lost their jobs and are hungry. Others are providing extra bonuses for their employees.

The scale and the scope of this country’s ability to harness its resources is still unparalleled. I hope we stem the tide in humans’ favor real soon. Fingers crossed.

The Bay Area weather was beautiful today. I just needed to step outside and take a walk. Somehow I ended up in one of the neighborhood markets to get some oatmeal flour and chocolate chips. I plan to bake some muffins over the weekend. It was difficult maneuvering around people though. It’s a tight space and no one is really monitoring how any people are entering at one time. I didn’t bring my mask (duh!) so I was worried about being too close to people, some of whom were not really conscious of the 6 feet social distance requirement! Horrors! Note to self – ALWAYS bring your mask along.

Though the cashier was nice to spray my hands with alcohol, it was a relief to get out of there. Don’t think I’m going back real soon. I’m becoming a germaphobe. I also need to be very careful. I have family members that are vulnerable. I need to make sure I’m healthy and I stay this way.

The walk was good for me. It was a much-needed exercise and a break from indoor life. I took the opportunity as well to sit out in our small backyard and enjoy the late afternoon sun and chat via WhatsApp with some friends overseas. I’m happy to note most are doing well. Some moments of peace in this uncertain environment.

Before I knew it, it was time to go back in and prepare dinner. I bought some red onions the other day to pickle. Decided to do that first.

Then, time for pizza. Another day is over and we’re safe and healthy. Something to be thankful for!
